HACEP’s Eisenhower Park Hosts 3rd Annual Reality Fair
GECU, HACEP partner to teach children financial life lessons
EL PASO, Texas – The Housing Authority of the City of El Paso, TX (HACEP), in partnership with GECU Community Development, hosted the 3rd Annual Reality Fair at HACEP’s Eisenhower Park, 5628 Eisenhower on Wednesday, July 18. Children ages 7+ experienced hands-on, real-life financial situations and learned how to make money-smart choices as they mature.
Professional financial coaches from GECU used roleplaying exercises to teach children valuable life skills, like budgeting, saving, investing and other important financial literacy lessons. Participants explored career choices and starting salary options and learned how to budget within their monthly salary. Food and drink were provided. Prizes, including an iPad – sponsored by GECU – were given away at the event.
“Financial literacy is the bedrock of adulthood and events like this provide hands-on experiences for our young residents to understand the importance of these concepts,” said HACEP CEO Gerald Cichon. “Community partnerships with homegrown businesses like GECU are essential when teaching our young residents the importance of personal financial responsibility.”
GECU’s Community Development partners with HACEP annually to help elevate the HACEP communities by providing financial education. A reality fair serves as an interactive literacy tool and is a unique opportunity for students to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own.
“GECU’s mission is people helping people, and the Reality Fair gives children in our community a chance to understand valuable life lessons as they mature into successful young adults,” said GECU President and CEO Crystal Long. “We are proud to host the Reality Fair with HACEP again this year and look forward to spreading Financial Education to HACEP residents.”
